Greece has officially urged the European Union to establish an emergency safety mechanism that would allow member states to temporarily suspend the processing of asylum applications during sudden, large-scale migration crises.

Speaking at the Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg, Greek Migration Minister Thanos Plevris argued that while existing EU migration rules have improved overall management, they remain insufficient when dealing with sudden mass border surges or scenarios where migration is deliberately engineered to exert political pressure. Athens cited recent emergency events such as the massive surge in arrivals at Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta as proof that bloc-wide tools must adapt to protect border security.

The proposal gained early backing from several member states advocating for stricter border controls. It coincides with broader discussions among EU officials regarding European Commission plans to introduce an emergency crisis framework, alongside ongoing negotiations to establish offshore return hubs outside the bloc to handle rejected claims.
