The Maldives and Japan marked a significant milestone in their diplomatic relationship, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Embassy of Japan in Malé.

A special reception was held in the capital to commemorate the establishment of the resident mission, which officially opened in 2016. Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, alongside Maldivian government officials, highlighted how the establishment of a physical diplomatic presence transformed bilateral ties over the past decade by streamlining consular services, enhancing direct political dialogue, and accelerating development cooperation.

Although formal diplomatic relations between the two nations date back to 1967, the opening of the embassy in Malé ten years ago solidified Japan's long-standing support for Maldivian infrastructure, disaster management, and educational scholarships. Both governments expressed a shared commitment to further strengthening economic ties and regional collaboration in the years ahead.
